There are several ways to smooth up a face with PS.
If you are using PhotoShop 7.0,
there is a function called "Healing Brush" which may help.
Below is the procedure of using Healing Brush:

The Healing brush tool can be found in the tool palette;
the bandage icon

Then select the proper size of the brush (menu bar on the top)

Here comes the trick: you have to select a reference point for healing mix….. CHOOSE a point near the area you want to heal. Why? Becoz the nearby area has a similar color tone and texture. You cannot simply use merely one reference point for all healing actions…. Remember PS is no secret, it is only hardwork!

The reference point is selected by pressing Alt+Mouse Left Click

Then by dragging and spotting the brush, you can remove the pimple, wrinkle,… anything you want to remove, but without losing the texture.
